Life Lessons from Football

Happy 2014 World Cup to everybody!

My partner is a big football fan and in the last few weeks I had ‘the pleasure’ to watch more football than ever before.

As a Life Coach I followed more the psychology of the game and the players rather than the actual game.

Are there any lessons that we can learn from this very popular game played by over 250 million people in 200 countries?

“That’s not fair!”, is one of the most common statements repeated by people. Well, that’s right, life isn’t fair. You will get knocked down, people will cheat and the call will not always go your way. But, you must get up and get back into the game or lose. If you stay down, you can’t win.

Being the best means preparing, persevering, and practising whether you want to or not. Things will be difficult at times, there will be trials and tribulations, it’s all part of life. But quitting is not an option.

Our young men need to regain a sense of responsibility, loyalty and commitment. The most important of these being commitment. There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.

The structure and discipline of football allows a coach to model, teach and reinforce all of the above traits. But, the coach must make each and every player accountable to the team.

What other life lessons did you learn from football whether you play it or watch it?

 Enjoy the football!
