How can we prevent cardiovascular diseases? A healthy lifestyle

corazonNumerous studies show that in today’s society, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death each year, surpassing even deaths from any type of cancer. This group of diseases include all affections of the heart and blood vessels throughout the body (arteries, veins and capillaries), some of which are: heart attack, stroke, atherosclerosis, etc.

 

Unfortunately, it is estimated that around 70% of people have got risk factors which help to produce this disease. Some risk factors are of the “non-modifiable” type, that is to say, a person is more predisposed to suffer from the disease because of fixed characteristics, such as:

Age: there is increased risk from 50-55 years.

Sex: apparently the deaths associated with these diseases occur equally in both sexes, although there are differences in the type of disease, being more common the strokes in women, and heart-related diseases in men.

Family history: People who have family members with cardiovascular diseases, for genetic reasons are more likely to develop it.

 

However, most of these deaths could be prevented by acting on many other “modifiable factors”, among which we can highlight: Obesity, diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure and dyslipidemia.

But, how can I, in a simple way, act on these risk factors to not having a heart attack, a stroke, or any other of these diseases?

It boils down to acquiring a healthy lifestyle.    

However, if we take an inadequate diet (with excess saturated fats, sweets, salt …), we abuse of tobacco and alcohol, and also our body doesn’t burn any of it doing exercise, due to we live a sedentary life, this will trigger a series of health complications: the increase of the levels of cholesterol in our body, the increase of our weight to become overweight or obese, the raise of the blood pressure levels, or the generation of new metabolic diseases like diabetes. All these complications will become the so-called risk factors for cardiovascular diseases we were talking about previously.

So, to answer the question that I have proposed you before, we should begin by the first link, i.e. changing our lifestyle and everything else will come alone, as a number of positive consequences.

 

But why if it is “so easy” to prevent the disease in this way, there are still many deaths related to it?

Well, it seems it is due to ignorance, on the part of the society, of all the positive consequences associated with an active lifestyle and proper nutrition. Most people think they need to make an extra effort to make time for exercise and a balanced diet. Not only that, people also are more comfortable leaving everything in the hands of the medications they take, for example, to lower blood pressure or cholesterol. And they don’t realize that changing small details of daily life such as walking to work instead of going by car, or changing their diet, possibly they wouldn’t need to take that medication because his health would be normalized, and it may also prevent complications later. It is shown that if these habits are established from childhood, quality of life improves in the long run. Namely, not because these diseases affect mostly elderly people, we must begin to act in adulthood.

 

To conclude I want to show a video from Dr. Mike Evans, which reflects the above issue very clearly, encouraging us to devote at least half an hour of our day to physical activity in a simple way, and in return we could enjoy many health benefits.

 So now you know, your health is in your hands. You are who decide how you want to live.
